Sciatica can cause uncomfortable symptoms that disrupt your normal daily routine and reduce your quality of life. If you have tried prescription medication for sciatica and haven’t found relief, or if you want to avoid taking prescription medication, a chiropractor can help. At SunCoast SpineCare: Chiropractic Neurology, our chiropractor, Dr. Jay Schwartz, can design a personalized chiropractic treatment plan to address lower back pain, bulging or herniated discs, and sciatica in Bradenton, FL. He may recommend a combination of therapies, including spinal decompression therapy, to help you find relief.

What Is Sciatica?

Sciatica isn’t a medical condition, but it is a collection of symptoms that occurs when there is damage, compression, infection, or irritation of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve can become irritated or inflamed after an injury, due to age-related degeneration, or because of a bulging or herniated disc. A bulging disc is a disc that has become damaged, causing the soft interior to leak out. This can put pressure on the sciatic nerve and cause sciatica. The most common symptoms of sciatica are lower back pain, numbness or tingling in the leg and foot, and a burning or itching pain that travels from the lower back down one or both legs.

How Does Spinal Decompression Treat Herniated or Bulging Discs?

Spinal decompression is a nonsurgical alternative to more invasive or risky treatment options for a herniated disc. During spinal decompression therapy, you will lie on a motorized traction table and wear a harness to stabilize your pelvis. Dr. Schwartz will control the movement and tension of the table using a computer program. As the table moves, it will gently stretch your limbs and spine. This can cause herniated or bulging discs to retract into place and allows nutrients and oxygen to flow freely around the spine and stimulate healing.

Can Spinal Decompression Relieve Other Types of Lower Back Pain?

Spinal decompression therapy is a safe and effective treatment option for lower back pain caused by:

  • Herniated or bulging discs
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Pinched nerves
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Arthritis of the spine
  • Bone spurs
