The Department of Transportation and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration require anyone who drives a commercial vehicle to have a physical exam every two years to retain their commercial driver’s licenses. The purpose of a DOT physical is to make sure you are physically and mentally fit. At SunCoast SpineCare: Chiropractic Neurology, our chiropractor, Dr. Jay Schwartz, is a chiropractic neurologist who has extensive experience performing standard physicals and DOT physicals in Bradenton, FL. He can help you meet the requirements of the DOT and the FMCSA by performing the exam in his comfortable, welcoming chiropractic clinic.

What Is a DOT Physical and When Do You Need One?

A DOT physical is a very thorough, comprehensive physical examination. It is more in-depth than a traditional physical exam, as it assesses your vision, hearing, heart, lungs, and cognitive or neurological functions. You will need to get a DOT physical if you drive a vehicle that can carry more than 15 people, are paid to drive a vehicle that can carry more than 8 people, transport hazardous material in your vehicle, or drive a vehicle that has a gross weight rating of 10,000 pounds or more on the interstate.

What Is a Regular Physical Exam?

A regular or standard physical exam includes a general check-up, taking your vital signs, checking your respiration and pulse, testing your vision, taking your height and temperature, and completing an exam of your head, ears, nose, and throat. Both adults and children should get a physical exam each year, even if they are healthy. Students may need a physical exam before they can register for school or play sports.

Finding the Right Physician for a Physical

It’s important to find a physician you are comfortable with to perform your exam. Getting a DOT physical can be stressful, most physicians are not certified to conduct a DOT physical, you may have trouble deciding where to go to get your exam. Dr. Schwartz and his team are friendly, experienced, and efficient. They can perform a thorough DOT physical that conforms to all the requirements established by the DOT and FMCSA.
