Vax-D and Cox Distraction for the treatment of Herniated Discs

Written By SunCoast SpineCare on October 19, 2017

Herniated discs can cause debilitating pain and require treatment in order to restore quality of life. They are caused when there is damage or injury to the vertebrae that puts pressure on the soft material, or cushioning, between the discs, causing the material to bulge and press against sensitive nerves in the spinal region.

There are a number of different approaches to herniated disc treatment that range from a milder approach with physical therapy to more invasive treatments like surgery. Two revolutionary treatments are now available for herniated disc treatment. One is a Vax-D approach and the other is referred to as Cox Distraction.

What is Vax-D and How Does It Work?

Vax-D is performed on a motorized table that provides decompression to stretch the lower lumbar region. Vax-D, which is an acronym for Vertebral Axial Decompression, in theory, lengthens the muscles surrounding the spine to create movement and space for vertebrae to return to a natural alignment while simultaneously relieving pressure on the disc material. With regular and successful treatment, the discs have the space to stop bulging and pain and pressure is eliminated.

Vax-D is generally performed under the supervision of a chiropractor on an outpatient basis. Treatment can average 20 to 30 treatments, each lasting anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes.

Is Cox Distraction Different from Vax-D?

Cox Distraction is a non-surgical alternative to treat herniated discs. The treatment uses hands on manipulation of the spine to allow decompression of the affected region. This manipulation aids in reducing pressure on nerves from the herniation, widens the spinal canal to improve circulation and reduce nerve pressure, and helps restore range of motion to damaged or injured vertebrae.

Cox Distraction is performed on a Cox® Table. After being tested to ensure that treatment will not exacerbate any existing condition, the patient lies face down while the provider applies pressure to stimulate movement in the lumbar region. The goal is to allow the spine to return to a more natural alignment, which reduces nerve and bone pressure that are causing pain.  Individual treatments last 10 to 15 minutes each and the frequency is determined by individual patient response.

Discuss Herniated Disc Treatment Options With Your Chiropractor

If you are suffering from pain associated with a herniated or ruptured disc, you should discuss the various treatment options to determine how best to eliminate the pain and return to a desired quality of life.
